Dry Needling Therapy in NJ

(Performed in our office by our licensed acupuncturist)

Performance Ortho is at the forefront of non-surgical management of pain and returning patients back to an active lifestyle. A recent trend in physical medicine and pain management is utilizing dry needling for treatment of muscle pain, spasm and active trigger points.

Dry Needling aka Trigger Point Release

In medicine, it is well understood that muscles are a significant pain generator. Muscles and surrounding soft tissue will frequently become hypertonic (tight) or develop protective spasms, which often result in active trigger points (“knots” in the muscle). Trigger points in muscles commonly accompany herniated spinal discs, sprains/strains, chronic postural syndromes and tendonitis, to name but a few conditions. Dry needling of trigger points is an effective conservative treatment modality offered at Performance Ortho.

Dry Needling involves the insertion of a very fine, solid filament needle into a tight band of muscles and/or trigger point(s). The term “dry” needling means there are no medications (such as cortisone or lidocaine) injected into the muscle. Most patients report the insertion of the needle is painless. The insertion of the needle produces a local “twitch” response in the muscle, followed by an increase in blood flow to the region, reduction of inflammatory irritants and a disruption of the pain cycle.

Dry Needling Consultation

Patients typically undergo a series of dry needling procedures in conjunction with Physical Therapy. Most patients will notice measurable improvements within six treatments. For more complex or unresponsive cases, the patient may consider other treatment options including Regenerative Medicine, Tenex Health TX ™ or Interventional Pain Management.

If you are suffering from muscle pain or spasm, dry needling may be a treatment option for you. For more information please feel free to contact one of our Patient Care Coordinators today at 908-754-1960 to make an appointment or book online.
