What is Hip Osteoarthritis (OA)?

There are several types of arthritis. Osteoarthritis is the most common, which is characterized by a wearing away of the cushioning cartilage located on the joint surface. OA is a chronic condition that occurs over many years. Patients will complain of hip stiffness upon rising in the morning, painful or tender joints that may be swollen, or a “crunching” or “popping” sound when moving the hip or leg. Symptoms are worse with standing and walking as well as when transitioning form sitting to standing. Groin pain and thigh pain are also common symptoms associated with OA of the hip.

Symptoms of Hip Osteoarthritis

  • Pain in or around the hip joint, low back or buttock region
  • Pain in the groin or front of leg
  • Stiffness/pain with movement
  • Limping or instability on your feet
  • Limited movement of the hip or spine
  • Weakness or atrophy in the muscles in the upper leg

Causes of Hip Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis of the hip results from the gradual wearing a way of cartilage of the hip joint over time.  May factors impact this condition, some of the more common are:  

  • Aging – Joint cartilage normally wears down over time. The progression of wear and tear is more common in older adults and people that have a genetic predisposition to OA.  
  • Genetics and chronic obesity – can significantly impact the progression to the OA of the hip.
