What is Hip Osteoarthritis?

There are several types of arthritis. Osteoarthritis is the most common, which is characterized by a wearing away of the cushioning cartilage located on the joint surface. OA is a chronic condition that occurs over many years. Patients will complain of hip stiffness upon rising in the morning, painful or tender joints that may be swollen, or a “crunching” or “popping” sound when moving the hip or leg. Symptoms are worse with standing and walking as well as when transitioning form sitting to standing. Groin pain and thigh pain are also common symptoms associated with OA of the hip.

Symptoms of Hip Osteoarthritis

  • Pain in the groin or front of leg
  • Stiffness/pain with movement

Causes of Hip Osteoarthritis

An injury or trauma to the hip can cause the bursa to fill with blood and/or its lining to become inflamed, resulting in bursitis symptoms. Repetitive pressure or friction to the bursa can have the same impact as a single, more serious trauma. For example, people who bike, run, or climb stairs regularly may be more prone to hip bursitis. Additionally, certain medical conditions involving inflammation have been known to contribute to the likelihood of developing bursitis such as rheumatoid arthritis and gout. Lastly, excess weight can put strain on the hip join, also increasing the risk of developing bursitis.
