What is Hip Bursitis?
The human body has dozens of small lubricating sacs located between bones and soft tissue structures called bursa. Bursitis is an inflammation of the bursa, which is usually the result of another underlying hip condition (e.g. tendonitis or osteoarthritis). Bursitis usually presents with intense pain on the outside of the hip that may progress down the thigh. Patients are unable to side lie on their hip and prolonged standing and walking will increase the symptoms.
Symptoms of Hip Bursitis
- Pain in or around the hip joint, low back or buttock region
- Pain in the groin or front of leg
- Stiffness/pain with movement
- Limping or instability on your feet
- Limited movement of the hip or spine
- Weakness or atrophy in the muscles in the upper leg

Causes of Hip Bursitis
An injury or trauma to the hip can cause the bursa to fill with blood and/or its lining to become inflamed, resulting in bursitis symptoms. Repetitive pressure or friction to the bursa can have the same impact as a single, more serious trauma. For example, people who bike, run, or climb stairs regularly may be more prone to hip bursitis. Additionally, certain medical conditions involving inflammation have been known to contribute to the likelihood of developing bursitis such as rheumatoid arthritis and gout. Lastly, excess weight can put strain on the hip join, also increasing the risk of developing bursitis.
