Intracept® Procedure (Basivertebral Nerve Ablation)

Targeted, Proven Relief for Chronic Lower Back Pain

Are you tired of living with persistent lower back pain that just won’t go away? Do you have pain in the middle of your lower back? Have you tried physical therapy or spinal injections with temporary relief? Your pain may stem from degenerative disc disease or arthritis affecting the vertebral endplates of your lumbar spine.

Most Common Symptoms of Chronic Lower Back Pain from Vertebral End Plates

  • Pain in the middle of the back with:
    • Bending forward
    • Prolonged sitting
    • Physical activity
    • Lifting

what is the Intracept® procedure?

The Intracept® procedure is an innovative FDA approved, minimally invasive treatment for chronic lower back pain. This new procedure gently targets the basivertebral nerve using radiofrequency energy (ablation) to “turn off” the pain signals from the spine to the brain, helping to reduce or eliminate chronic lower back pain.

What are vertebral endplates?

Vertebral endplates are the flat surfaces at the top and bottom of each vertebra (spine bone). They help connect the vertebrae to the discs, which act as shock absorbers between the bones. Disc degeneration, and the wear and tear that occurs with everyday living, produces stresses on the endplates that damage them, leading to inflammation and vertebrogenic pain.

FAQ’s

Only a pain management physician trained in the Intracept® procedures would be able to determine if you are a candidate. Following a consultation and examination, the physician will discuss your available options.

Different from other nerves in the body that regenerate, the basivertebral nerve has not shown an ability to grow back as a pain-transmitting nerve, so results are long standing.

To confirm that a patient has vertebrogenic pain, physicians use MRI to look for specific changes that occur with endplate, which are called Modic changes.

The Intracept® procedure is a same day procedure performed in our own ambulatory surgical center, under sedation. Patients report mild soreness for a couple days after the procedure, but overall is well tolerated.
