What is Spine Facet Syndrome?
The facet joints in the lower back (lumbar spine) and neck (cervical spine) are small but essential joints that help support movement and stability in the spine. These joints are enclosed in a protective capsule and allow the spine to bend, twist, and extend smoothly.
Over time, due to natural aging, repetitive movements, or injury, facet joints can wear down and become arthritic. Leading to inflammation, stiffness, and pain, making movements like bending backward (spinal extension) uncomfortable.
Individuals with facet joint issues often experience localized lower spine pain-it does not radiate to arms or legs- that worsens with activities like standing for long periods or arching the back. To ease discomfort, many people naturally adopt a slightly forward-leaning posture, as bending forward reduces pressure on the affected joints.
Symptoms of a Facet Syndrome
Common symptoms of lumbar facet joint pain include:
- Aching or sharp pain in the lower back, sometimes spreading to the buttocks or thighs
- Stiffness and difficulty straightening the back after prolonged sitting or sleeping
- Increased pain with standing, twisting, or bending backward
- Temporary relief when sitting, bending forward, or changing positions
