Do I have a pinched nerve in my neck?

If you have pain that radiates down your arm, you may have a pinched nerve in your neck.

Nerves are your body’s alert system. For example, if you have your hand over something hot, your nerves tell you to pull away. These signals are important for your body’s safety.

What is a pinched nerve & what causes it?

When a nerve is pinched, it often disrupts its ability to function. This can cause pain, numbness, or tingling.

A pinched nerve is often the result of compression, constriction or overstretching. In our clinic, we often see pinched nerves caused by:

  • Herniated disks: If a cervical disk is irritated or displaced it can put pressure on a nerve in the neck.
  • Spinal Stenosis: Sometimes the spinal space in between your vertebrae can narrow. This can put pressure on or squeeze the nerves in your neck.
  • Degenerative disks: Over time the disks in your spine may degenerate due to age or other factors. This may cause your vertebrae to become compressed and pinch a nerve.

What are the treatment options for a pinched nerve?

Pinched nerves can often be fixed with a combination of conservative treatments like anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, chiropractic care, and potentially some injection-based medicine. If you are feeling a radiating pain, we recommend being evaluated by a physician.
